Motherhood and God

Musings of Motherhood: How Do They Know?

How do they know??

I’ve been a mom five times over in the past 8 years and it still boggles my mind.

How do children know when you are exhausted and devoid of all patience?

How do they know to all start crying, whining, and throwing tantrums at the EXACT same time?

How do they know to time the spilled doggie water bowl, poopy underwear, and the pinched finger in the doorway all within exactly 3 minutes of each other?

How do they know to all NOT take decent naps on the very same day?

How do they know to take turns getting out of bed for 2 hours last their bedtime?

They just KNOW!!

And thankfully, GOD KNOWS TOO!!

HE knows when you are at your wits end and can’t take one more argument.

HE knows when all you see are dirty dishes, laundry that needs folding, emails that need sending, rooms that need cleaning (IMMEDIATELY!), and toys/books that need picking up.

HE knows when you are on the brink of tears, ready to scream in frustration at all the work you’ve done and all the work that needs to be done.

HE knows when you feel like an absolute failure.

HE knows when your heart cries out, searching for a purpose the world tries to convince you lies outside the home.

HE knows. HE sees. And HE whispers softly through the tears, ” THIS is your purpose. This is your mission.”

HE sees our struggles and pain. Our frustrations and despair.

The tiny hands that hold ours – this is our mission as mothers!

But this, right here, is where we are meant to be.

Smack in the middle of unending days of chaos, dirty kitchens, and unmade beds. The sole person that these little souls look up to and depend on every single day of their lives. The one who gives unconditional love, no matter how many times we have to say the EXACT same thing! The one that drys their tears, hugs the hurt away and says “I love you” for the umpteenth time that day.

This phase of life is not easy. It is lonely. It is challenging. But when that tiny hand grabs yours, when that little head lays on your shoulder, and when arms fling around your neck and squeeze tight – know in the depth of your heart and soul: you are EXACTLY where you need to be. And you will never have a better purpose.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jer. 29:11.
